Discontinuous Quality Groups Viewed Through The Lens Of SFL Theory

Fawcett (2010: 262):
Within the structure of the nominal group, the same two principles lead to discontinuous quality groups such as the one indicated by the underlined portion of a more important person than he is. Here, the words than he is constitute a finisher in the discontinuous quality group more (t) important (a) [...] than he is (f). Figure 23 (taken from Fawcett in press) illustrates the notation for showing this type of discontinuity. Thus, whenever a line showing the relationship of componence crosses another representation of a relationship (here exponence) we have a case of discontinuity.
